This article describes how to control connections to published applications or published desktops from specific versions of Citrix Workspace app for Windows.
In the steps below, configure local group policies using the Windows Group Policy Object administrative template for Citrix Workspace app.
Note: If you configure Domain Group Policy instead of Local Group Policy, set it on a computer in your Active Directory environment where the Group Policy Management Console (gpmc.msc) is installed.
Instructions
To restrict connections from clients\endpoints having older versions of Citrix Workspace app for Windows,
Perform the following steps:
Prepare the administrative template file for Citrix Workspace app for Windows.
- Install the latest version of Citrix Workspace app for Windows on a test computer such as a verification environment and obtain the following files.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\Configuration
receiver.admx
CitrixBase.admx
C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\Configuration\<language and country code> folder
receiver.adml
CitrixBase.adml
- Save the administrative template file in the following folders on the computer where you want to configure the local group policy.
- Save receiver.admx and CitrixBase.admx in the C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions folder.
- Save receiver.adml and CitrixBase.adml in the C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\<language and country code> folder.
- Launch the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) on the client/endpoint where the workspace app is installed or will be installed.
* For Domain Group Policy, launch the Group Policy Management Console (gpmc.msc) and configure Group Policy which will be applied to the endpoint/client machines.
- Under [Computer Configuration] node, select [Administrative Templates] > [Citrix Components] >
- On the right side of the screen, the [Allow client connections] policy is displayed. Right-click and click [Edit].
- Check [Enabled] and [Enable client].
- Enter the version of Citrix Workspace that allows connections in [Minimum client version].
- For example, to allow Citrix Workspace 2212 and later versions, change to the format 22 + 0 + 12 and enter “22012”.
- The image below allows Citrix Workspace 2303 and later versions to connect.

- Click [Apply] and click [OK].
- Close the Local Group Policy Editor
- Start Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Execute the following command to apply the policy.
gpupdate /force
- Confirm that the policy update has completed successfully from the execution result message.

- On the client computer, launch Citrix Workspace and check the operation.
- If you try to launch a published application or published desktop from a version of Citrix Workspace that is older than the version specified in the policy, the following message will be displayed and you will not be able to launch it.
