Description

Support for H.265 Encoding/Decoding
H.265 video encoding on 7.16 VDAs (with H.265-compatible NVIDIA GPUs) and H.265 video decoding on Citrix Receiver for Windows 4.10 is supported for hardware acceleration of remote graphics and videos.

Instructions

To benefit from this feature, it must be supported and enabled on both the VDA and Citrix Receiver for Windows. If the GPU on the endpoint does not support H.265 decoding using the DXVA interface, the H.265 Decoding for graphics policy settings is ignored and the session falls back to using the H.264 video codec.

Prerequisites

  1. VDA 7.16 and later, and with H.265-compatible NVIDIA GPUs.
  2. Receiver for Windows 4.10
  3. Enable the Optimize for 3D graphics workload policy (configuration / policies on citrix studio) on the VDA.
  4. Enable the Use hardware encoding for video codec policy  (configuration / policies on citrix studio) on the VDA.
Note: H.265 encoding is supported only on the NVIDIA GPU.
In Citrix Receiver for Windows, this feature is set to Disabled by default.

Configuring Citrix Receiver for Windows to use H.265 video encoding

  1. Open the Citrix Receiver Group Policy Object administrative template by running gpedit.msc. Citrix Receiver ADMX/ADML templates needs to be imported in GPO first.
  2. Under the Computer Configuration node, go to Administrative Templates > Citrix Receiver > User Experience.
  3. Select the H.265 Decoding for graphics policy.
  4. Select Enabled.
  5. Click Apply and OK.

Note: If the Hardware acceleration for Graphics policy is disabled in the Citrix Receiver Group Policy Object administrative template, the H.265 Decoding for graphics policy settings is ignored. The feature is then not applied and falls back to using the H.264 video codec.

Issue/Introduction

H.265 offers better bitrate performance and bandwidth utilization performance over H.264. Starting with Receiver for Windows 4.10 and version 7.16 VDAs with H.265 compatible NVIDIA GPUs, VDA H.265 encoding and Receiver H.265 decoding is supported.
