C drive of a 2.x desktop is running low on space
Instructions
Overview
If a Unidesk/App Layering 2.0 Desktop runs out of room in its User Layer, you can increase the amount of space allowed for it by:
Increasing the provisioned disk sizes in VMware vCenter
Extending the volumes using Windows Disk Management
Any backups you make after this change will use the newUser Layer disk sizes.
Note: This process does not update User Layer backups made prior to this change. If you restore a Desktop to a backup you made before increasing its storage space, the User Layer would return to its original disk size.
Prerequisites
This process will require shutting down the Desktop so you can modify the Desktop’s settings in VMware vCenter.
Procedure
Increase the provisioned disk sizes
This procedure explains how to use VMware vSphere Client to increase the amount of disk space provisioned for the desktop.
Use the Unidesk Management Console to shut down the desktop for which you want to expand the User Layer. This ensures the Desktop is put into maintenance mode in the broker environment.
Use VMware vCenter to delete any snapshots on the desktop virtual machine. Unidesk leverages these VMware snapshots for backups of the User Layer.
VMware vCenter, right-click the virtual machine and choose Edit Settings from the popup menu.
Locate the two User Layer virtual machine disks (VMDKs), usually the last two hard disks in the list. The Disk File path setting includes a directory called User and the Desktop name. For example:
[datastore1] NameOfCP/UnideskLayers/User/nameofdesktop/P189be95d0000006f.B0.R1.V1-000001.vmdk
In the VMware Virtual Machine (VM) Properties, select each of the hard disks and increase the provisioned size of each disk to the larger size. Be sure to change the setting for both disks.
In VMware vCenter Tasks & Events, verify the completed reconfiguration tasks for this Desktop, which is a virtual machine (VM) in VMware.
From within the Unidesk Management Console (UMC), restart the Desktop. This clears the maintenance mode lock in the broker.
Once the Desktop VM restarts, login as an admin user via its VMware Windows console.
Increase the User Layer volumes in Windows Disk management, as described in the following procedure.
WARNING: Unidesk does not support and cannot read Microsoft Dynamic Disks. Make sure you do not convert the disks to dynamic when you expand them. You must only extend the Basic Disk.
Extend the volumes
This procedure explains how to use Windows Disk Management to extend the volumes for this desktop.
From the Start menu right click the Computer icon and select Manage. This launches the Computer Management Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
In the left pane, select Storage > Disk Management.
In the Center pane, scroll to the bottom of the screen where each disk and its partitions are shown. The last disks in the list have the modified User Layers. For each of these disks, the total Disk space allocation appears on the left, with the new unallocated space shown on the right.
Right click each of the last two disks, and select Extend Volume for each primary (blue) partition.
This launches the Extend Volume wizard. Select Next, and ensure the disk selected is the disk you are expanding.
Click Next and then Finish.
The User Layer is now expanded.
Note: The Unidesk Management Console will still show the previously provisioned size of the layer and will not reflect this expansion.
