Description
If you see "The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error" in any of the Unidesk failure messages, it means there is a problem with an ESX host. Keep in mind that vSphere will route filesystem requests to any available ESX host that has the requested VMFS mounted, including ones that are in maintenance mode and cannot perform the requests.
Resolution
Check the status of your hosts and storage and try the following steps to troubleshooting which host may be in trouble:
- Log in to each ESX host (via the vSphere client)
- Browse the datastore where a trouble desktop is
- Find the troubled desktop and open the folder
- Highlight the *.vmsd file or a *.log file
- Download the file to your desktop
If you are able to download a file, move onto the next ESX host until you receive an error.
Possible corrective actions are to restart the management services on the host, re-add the host to a cluster, remove the host from inventory if it is in maintenance mode. You may also need to reach out VMWare for further assistance.
