Description

This article describes how to replace a faulty hard disk drive/solid-state drive on the ADC SDX 115XXX series of appliances.

Background

In case of an unfortunate event of the VPX-SR failure, it will be required to replace the faulty Hard Disk Drive(HDD)/Solid State Drive(SSD). Replacing the HDD/SSD requires a factory reset operation, so before replacing the HDD/SSD it is important to perform the necessary backup configuration of all ADC instances.

Instructions

Replacing the HDD/SSD requires a factory reset operation, so before replacing the HDD/SSD it is important to collect the backup of the SDX appliance.

For Builds 13.0 59.X, 12.1 57.X

From 13.0 59.X, 12.1 57.X on-wards, factory reset would not be required but there is a provision for the user to repair the SR by re-creating it.

Following are the instructions to replace the HDD:
  • On SDX UI, go to Launch Configuration > Storage
  • Choose the VPX-SR. Delete. This would require VPXs hosted on VPX-SR to be deleted by the user
  • Refer section 'Installing a New Hard Disk Drive (HDD)' for replacing the old HDD and inserting the new HDD.
  • On SDX UI, Choose the VPX-SR. Create
  • User can either restore backup or provision instances. Refer to Restoring Configuration from Configuration Utility section.

Installing a new Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

  1. Locate the hard disk drive on the back panel of the appliance, Slot 2.

  2. Verify that the replacement hard disk drive is the correct type for the SDX platform.

  3. To remove the existing hard disk drive disengage the hard disk drive by pushing the safety latch of the drive cover to the right or down, depending on the platform, while pulling out on the drive handle to disengage. Pull out the faulty drive.
Note: The illustration in the following figures might not represent the actual SDX appliance.

  4. Pick up the new disk drive, open the drive handle fully to the left, and insert the new drive into the slot as far as possible. To seat the drive, close the handle flush with the rear of the appliance so that the hard drive locks securely into the slot.
Important! When you insert the drive, make sure that the Citrix product label is at the top.

  5. Turn on the SDX ADC appliance. Connect to the SVM GUI.

  6. Perform a factory reset via SVM GUI.
  7. Upload a platform license and any optional feature licenses, including universal licenses, to the SDX appliance.

  8. Update the Software to the previously running version.
Note: Make sure the firmware is running the same version as the backup configuration file, if not, upgrade the firmware to the same version as that of the backup configuration file.
The default factory shipping image is 11.1 56.120. If running a lower version, a request to a lower image is necessary to be able to upgrade to the same version as the backup file as SDX downgrade is not supported.

  9.  Once the correct ADC software version is loaded, you can restore the working configuration.

Note:- Steps 6 to 9 are not required for SDXs of versions higher than 13.0 59+

Performing a Factory Reset

The factory reset process takes approximately 30 minutes.
Important! Make sure you connect a serial console cable to the appliance before performing a factory reset.
