Description

Occasionally, when Delete Locally Cached Profiles on logoff policy is enabled on Windows 10 Redstone, or on Windows Server 2016, NTUSER.DAT* files cannot be deleted when a user logs off.

Resolution

Try one of the following options:

  1. Enable the Delay before deleting cached profiles policy. The default delay value is 0, and Profile management deletes locally cached profiles immediately. Different values can be set according to different platforms’ performance. You can set different values for Windows 10 Redstone and Windows Server 2016 respectively. Setting a value greater than 40 seconds is highly recommended. This policy does not extend your logoff time. OR

  2. Disable the Delete locally cached profiles on logoff policy if there is no need to use it.

Problem Cause

If the local NTUSER.DAT* files are in use by another process while a user logs off, the files cannot be deleted. The next time the user logs on to the same client device, another local profile username.userdomain is created.
