Description

When launching or reconnecting a session, the desktop seems to freeze for about 15-30 seconds, and then it starts working again and user is able to interact with it.

Resolution

Disable the DWM (Desktop Window Manager) Session Manager Service and restart the VDA.
For pooled desktops, disable the service on the master image and update the catalog. For provisioned machines, either put the vDisk in private mode or create a new version and disable the services.

Problem Cause

Windows 7 includes a set of services, many of which are enabled as default. When using Citrix XenDesktop these services provide little value increases the longer the system is maintained. One of these services is the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service, which is responsible for Windows 7 Aero theme, and is disabled during the VDA software installation when selecting the option to optimize the desktop. This applies a predetermined set of optimizations specifically recommended for Pooled and Dedicated machines as part of the VDA installation process.
