Resolution

If you are not using VMware Vsheild, then remove the vsepflt driver. For more information refer to - http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2034490

OR

If VMware vSheild is needed, then install the following Microsoft Hot Fix - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2614892/EN-US

The following steps should be followed to apply the patch to the system:
1. On a system with the black screen or a partially responding system, power-off the VM and remove the 10 GB secondary disk.
2. Once removed power on the VM and log in to the OS.
3. Copy the Microsoft hot fix files downloaded from Microsoft link for Platform: x64 or Platform: x86 to the VM desktop.
4. Apply patch and reboot VM.
5. Power down OS.
6. Add another new 10 GB thick disk with all defaults through edit settings on VM in vSphere client.
7. Power on VM and Personal vDisk will detect the disk and will reboot the VM.
8. Log in back into OS and you should see P drive (personal vDisk).

Problem Cause

Known issue with VMware Vsheild driver. This behavior is being caused by the mountmgr.sys file in the Windows 7 OS causing a deadlock. Microsoft also reports that this affects 2008 machines as well.
