Description

The SmartHub tool helps a user customize the settings of his/her managed (pooled) XenDesktop, thus allowing the user to be more self-reliant and improving user experience in a non-persistent desktop environment. SmartHub is used internally within Citrix and has served in reducing many internal Helpdesk calls for common user requests.

SmartHub consists of two components that work together:

  • SmartHub Console that is intended for use by admins to configure the various SmartHub features
  • SmartHub Client that is intended for desktop users and deployed on pooled desktops

Current version of SmartHub includes the following features:

  • Alerts – Admins can send alerts of various types to desktop users informing about IT or other company info
  • Auto Launch – Admins and users can enable or disable Windows desktop start-up applications
  • Application Request – Desktop users can request their IT helpdesk to push out applications in an easy way
  • System Info – Users can easily see relevant XD and Windows system information on their desktop

Prerequisites

  • XenDesktop 7
  • SmartHub Console
    1. Windows 8.1 or Windows 10
    2. Microsoft Word 2013 or 2016
    3. PowerShell 3.0
    4. File share with read and write access
  • SmartHub Client
    1. Windows 8.1 or Windows 10
    2. PowerShell 3.0
    3. File share with read access

Installing SmartHub

The SmartHub tool has two install packages – SmartHubConsole.msi for SmartHub Console, and SmartHub.msi for SmartHub Client. Installation of these packages is straightforward.

How to Use SmartHub

SmartHub User Guide and SmartHub Console User Guide are included in the downloadable package. These provide detailed info on how to configure and use SmartHub for both regular users and console users/admins.

Security Permissions Required by SmartHub

A network file share is required for the SmartHub data store. The SmartHub Console requires read and write access to this share.  The SmartHub Client requires read access.

Data Modified by SmartHub

SmartHub creates a registry entry and an XML file.

The XML file is stored on the file share and includes all content created from the SmartHub console.

The Registry entry points to the SmartHub share and XML data file. The entry must exist along with both the Console and Client versions of SmartHub. The SmartHub Console creates this entry when the configuration file is created. The SmartHub Client’s entry must be created by the administrator. We recommend using Group Policy Preferences to create the entry. Group Policy is also the recommended way to deploy the SmartHub Client. See included User Guide for more details.

Registry Key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Citrix\SmartHub

Value:

ConfigFile

Data:

\\Fileshare\SMarthub\Smarthub.XML

Type:

REG_SZ

How to Undo the Changes Made by SmartHub

SmartHub changes registry entries in the following key:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Modify these entries to your standards upon removal of SmartHub.

Uninstalling SmartHub

1. Uninstall the SmartHub Client or Console via Programs and Features.

2. Remove the SmartHub registry entry HKLM\Software\Citrix\SmartHub

3. Delete the XML in the file share
