This article describes how to automatically move applications to the Start menu using Receiver for Windows 4.0 and 4.1.
Refer to Start Menu Integration and Desktop Shortcut Management for significantly improved operations with Receiver 4.2 and later.

Background

The default operation of Citrix Receiver for Windows 4.0 and 4.1 configured for pass-through authentication is as follows:

  • When user initially logs on to a desktop with no profiles (manually deleted after log off), Receiver does not actively add apps to Start Menu.

  • When the user launches Receiver manually, it authenticates and loads the apps to the Start Menu.

  • On subsequent logons, the apps are still there as long as that user's profile remains on the desktop.

Use the following settings to configure Receiver for Windows 4.0 and 4.1 to automatically install user’s applications after they authenticate. This must work in either of these scenarios.

  • VDI using mandatory profiles.

  • User gets a new physical machine, thus a new profile is created.
Note: Receiver periodically refreshes the list of applications for the user in the start menu.

  • This happens after an initial (configurable) delay, then periodically after that (also configurable).

  • User needs to log on for this to happen, but that log on will be silent if Windows integrated authentication is being used.

Instructions

To make this instant, add a new subkey or entry to the registry with the following command syntax:

Caution! Refer to the Disclaimer at the end of this article before using Registry Editor.

  • REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Citrix\Dazzle /f /v InitialRefreshMinMs /t REG_SZ /d 1

  • REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Citrix\Dazzle /f /v InitialRefreshMaxMs /t REG_SZ /d 1

To prevent dialog boxes when resources are removed from the server, use the following command syntax:

REG ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Citrix\Dazzle /f /v DontWarnOfRemovedResources /t REG_SZ /d True

Environment

Caution! Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that might require you to reinstall your operating system. Citrix cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. Be sure to back up the registry before you edit it.

Issue/Introduction

This article contains information to automatically move Applications to Start Menu using Receiver for Windows 4.0 and 4.1.

Additional Information

Methods for configuring where applications go to the Start Menu Folder are discussed in the following Citrix Documentation - Configure and install Receiver for Windows using command-line parameters.

Comparison of the preceding Receiver 4.x configuration with Receiver 3.4 Enterprise with a XenApp Legacy (PNA) site:

Receiver 4.X Auto Start Menu Experience

Receiver 3.4 Enterprise

  • Auto Provisioned and User

  • Subscribed app appears in Start Menu (Or in Folders in the Start Menu )

  • User can still open Receiver from the notification area menu and add new accounts or remove and add more apps

  • User can remove apps using Add/ Remove programs

  • Useable on managed physical or virtual desktop

  • If using StoreFront, mark resources as ‘auto subscribed’ on the backend provider

  • All resources for user are placed in the Start Menu (Or in Folders in the Start Menu or as Desktop Shortcuts)
  • User cannot open Receiver, add new accounts or remove and add more apps using the Receiver UX

  • User can remove apps using add remove program but all apps will be restored at the next logon and any deleted shortcuts will be recreated

  • Useable on managed physical or virtual desktop
