Description

On a target hosted on a VMWare Hypervisor and running Provisioning Services Target Device Software 6.0 and later, the target device cannot connect to virtual disk when starting it from the local hard drive. A red ‘X’ appears on the virtual disk status icon in the system tray.

In the Event Viewer, the following message appears:
Event ID 7026
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
bnistack

Resolution

To resolve this issue, complete the following steps on the Image that is hosted on the VMWare Hypervisor:

  1. Uninstall the Provisioning Services target device software from the virtual machine and restart.

  2. Click Start > Run.

  3. Type cmd and click OK to open a command prompt.

  4. Run the following command:
    set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

  5. Run the following command from the same command prompt window to open the Device Manager:
    devmgmt.msc

  6. Click View > Show hidden devices.

  7. Expand the Network adapter node. Locate the inactive icons, which indicate unused device drivers.

  8. Right-click the inactive icon and click Uninstall for each icon to remove the unused device drivers.

  9. Restart the virtual machine if prompted.

  10. Re-install the Provisioning Server target device software and restart. You should now be able to connect to the virtual disk.

Note: Do not remove ghost Network Interface Cards (NICs) on XenServer target device VMs.

Problem Cause

When installing the Provisioning Services target device software on the master image you are using to create the vDisk, one or more ghost NICs are present in Device Manager. The target device software is binding to one of the ghost NICs.

You can view the ghost NICs in the Device Manager, as shown in the following screen shot:
