Description

This article describes how to image target device using the Imaging Wizard.

Prerequisites

  • Enable Windows Automount on Windows Enterprise Server operating systems.

  • Disable Windows Autoplay.

  • Remove any virtualization software before performing a conversion.

  • Verify adequate free space exists on the destination, which is approximately 101 percent of used space on the source volumes.

  • Select a Network Interface Card (NIC) for imaging that has a binding to PVS, which is the NIC binding chosen during the installation of the Target Device software.

Background

The Imaging Wizard is provided with the release of PVS 5.6 and newer, and automates the following steps:
  • Adding the target device to a collection.

  • Creating the vDisk in the PVS database.

  • Imaging the operating system to that file without having to physically go to a PVS Server.

Instructions

Complete the following steps to image a target device using Imaging Wizard:
  1. Log on to the master target device using an Active Directory account with local administrative privileges.
  2. From the master target device's Windows Start menu, select Citrix > Provisioning Services > Imaging Wizard. The wizard welcome page appears. Click Next.

Note:  If both .NET 3.0 SP1 or newer is installed and Windows Automount is enabled, the Imaging Wizard starts automatically after the target device software installation completes.

  3. The Connect to Farm page appears. Type the name or IP address of a PVS Server in the farm to connect, and the port used to connect to it.. Use the Windows credentials (default), or type different credentials and click Next.

  4. The Select New or Existing vDisk page appears. Select to create a new vDisk (default), or use an existing vDisk by typing its name and click Next.

  5. The New vDisk page appears. Type the vDisk name and select  a vDisk type. If choosing dynamic type, also select the vDisk block size and click Next.

  6. The Microsoft Volume Licensing page appears. Select the volume license option or select None if volume licensing is not being used. You can also select None to configure the volume licensing later after the vDisk is created. Click Next.

  7. The Configure Image Volumes page appears. Select the source volumes for imaging in the Source table. The vDisk partitions will be an exact replica of the master target device's hard disk drive unless the partitions are deselected.

  8. Select the destination volumes and size them as needed in the Destination table.

Note: The type of file system associated with the selected volume must be NTFS.

  9. In Total capacity, verify the amount of space not allocated to used or free space of any volume.

    • To reserve space on the virtual disk for creating or extending volumes later, change the unallocated space.

    • To change the unallocated space to a specific value, type the number of megabytes.

    • To increment the unallocated space by one megabyte, click the Up arrow button.

    • To decrement the unallocated space by one megabyte, click the Down arrow button.

    • To change the unallocated space to zero megabytes, click the Reset button.

Note:  The maximum capacity of a vDisk is 2040 GB.
  10. In Total unallocated, use the Up and Down arrows to select the amount of space to leave unallocated. Click Next.
Note: Steps 9 & 10 do not apply to PVS 7.1 and higher, which has a newer block based P2PVS but still applies to older versions.

  11. The Add Target Device page appears. Type the target device name and click Next.

Note: The machine name cannot be used as the name for the target device being imaged. If the target device is a domain member, use the same name as in the Windows domain, unless that name is the same as the machine name being imaged. When the target device boots from the vDisk, the name entered here becomes the target device machine name.

  12. Select the NIC (which contains the MAC address) and the collection to add this device and click Next. If the target device is already a member of the farm, the Existing Target Devices page appears. Click Next.

  13. The Summary of Farm Changes page appears. Verify all changes, and then click Optimize for Provisioning Services. Choose OK and click Finish.

  14. A confirmation message appears. Change the target settings to PXE/network boot and click Yes on the confirmation message to reboot and start the imaging process.

  15. Log on to the target device. The Imaging Wizard starts automatically. If you see a message to restart the computer, click Restart Later.

  16. Once the wizard is done, click Finish. The target device's desktop appears.

  17. Open PVS Console. Choose the newly created vDisk, open File Properties and select Enable Active Directory machine account password management.
  18. Still in the PVS Console, choose the newly created target device, right-click and select Properties and change the Boot from option to vDisk. Right-click the target again and using the Active Directory drop-down menu, select Create Machine Account.

  19. Change boot device to PXE.
  20. Reboot target device.

The target device will boot from the vDisk.
