Description

Symptoms

When using Chinese, Japanese, or Korean (CJK) Microsoft IME & keyboard layout “Sync only once” mode in a Citrix virtual desktop or app session, you may experience:

  • The IME input mode cannot be switched by using the physical keyboard keys. (e.g., toggling between Hangul and English, or between Hiragana and Direct Input)
  • Characters cannot be input after switching the input mode.

Cause

This issue occurs when the "Use previous version of Microsoft IME" compatibility option is enabled on the client machine. This compatibility setting changes how Windows handles IME keyboard input processing, which conflicts with the Citrix Workspace App's keyboard and text input handling.

The compatibility mode is controlled by registry values under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\input\tsf\tsf3override\

When any NoTsf3Override* value is set to 1 (REG_DWORD) under the relevant IME key, the older IME behavior is active.

Resolution

Disable the IME compatibility mode to use the new version of Microsoft IME:

Via Windows Settings

Issue/Introduction

Citrix Workspace App - CJK IME compatibility mode may cause input issues in Citrix Workspace Sessions

Additional Information

  • This setting is a per-user client-side configuration — it does not need to be changed on the VDA (server side).
  • This issue affects Citrix Workspace App for Windows 2511 and 2603 versions that use Windows CoreText for IME handling.
  • Microsoft introduced the "previous version" IME compatibility mode in Windows 10 version 2004. The new IME version provides better integration with modern text input frameworks used by Citrix Workspace App.
