Description
New Microsoft IME Toolbar may not work properly in Published Application (Seamless) Sessions
Applicable Products
- Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops
-
Citrix Workspace app
Problem
When using a published (seamless) application on a Windows 11 VDA with Japanese input configured and the New IME Toolbar enabled, one or both of the following symptoms may occur:
- The New IME toolbar disappears when the published application window is moved so that the toolbar position falls outside the application's work area.
- The New IME toolbar cannot be moved — unlike the Classic language bar, it is fixed and not draggable within the seamless window.
Note: This issue does not occur in non-seamless (windowed) mode. Pressing Shift+F2 to switch to non-seamless mode allows the IME toolbar to be moved normally.
Cause
The New IME toolbar is a component of TextInputHost.exe, introduced by Microsoft in Windows 11 as a replacement for the Classic language bar.
This is a platform limitation resulting from Microsoft's architectural changes to the IME toolbar in Windows 11.
Resolution
Workaround: Use Generic Client IME
Generic Client IME (also known as "local IME" or "Client IME") offloads input method processing to the client machine, bypassing the server-side IME toolbar entirely.
Steps to enable:
- On the client machine, open Citrix Workspace app settings.
- Navigate to Keyboard settings and set Keyboard layout sync to Dynamic sync.
- Start a published application session.
- Switch the client input language to Japanese (or the desired CJK language).
- The remote language bar on the VDA will switch to Citrix IME as a proxy, and input will be processed locally via Generic Client IME.
Issue/Introduction
In a Windows 11 seamless session, the New Microsoft IME Toolbar may disappear if moved outside the application's boundaries or become entirely unmovable. These display and positioning issues are unique to seamless mode and do not occur when using windowed (non-seamless) sessions.
