Description

When deploying Teams 2.x in an App Layer on Server 2022/W11 Multi-session, Teams would not show up in the start menu.

Resolution

Workaround (old version of App Layering used) : Install Teams in the OS layer for Server 2022/W11 Multi-session.  AL 24.3.8 now prevents StateRepository-Machine.srd from coming from any layer other than the OS layer because of the difference in functionality.  On Server 2022/W11 Multi-session, Teams will only work if installed in the OS layer.

Solution: Upgrade App Layering to 2503

Fixes in recent versions:

  • You might see a WebView2 error when launching Teams in App Layering with a full user layer. [UNI-91709]
  • Microsoft Teams fails to launch with “the parameter is incorrect” after rebooting a session host with Elastic Layering (EL) enabled and Profile Management. [UNI-91649]
  • Microsoft Teams fails to launch when short names are disabled, resulting in the error message ‘The data area passed to a system call is too small.’ [UNI-91520]
  • You might face issues in finding Microsoft Teams in the Start search bar after installation in App Layering. [ALHELP-1790]
  • Microsoft Teams does not launch on Server 2019 due to reparse point behavior specific to this OS. The LocalCache folder created for Teams is a reparse point with a specific tag. [UNI-91177]
  • You may experience issues with Teams failing to launch, after upgrading the ELM. As a workaround, you can install Microsoft Teams in the OS layer. This ensures that you will have access to Teams as an NP VDI user, allowing you to perform monthly updates alongside your regular OS updates. [ALHELP-1778]

Problem Cause

At the time of this writing, this is a technical limitation of Server 2022/W11 Multi-session.  There is a functional difference between W10/W11/2019 and Server 2022/W11 Multi-session in the way it handles \ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\StateRepository-Machine.srd.  While there are other issues that can cause Teams not to show up in the start menu, this specific limitation does not apply to Server 2019 or W10/W11.  It appears to be specific to changes Microsoft made to Server 2022/W11 Multi-session.
