Description

The VMWare based PVS target boots from the vdisk to message "Attempting to set IP address on Boot NIC..." and 60 seconds later BSODs.
The vdisk will boot successfully on the master target device, but not on other devices.

Resolution

The VMWare VM configuration was adjusted, ensuring that ethernet0.pciSlotNumber matched between master target where vdisk was captured and subsequent targets booting the vdisk.

Steps

  1. Edit VMWare VM Options -> Advanced->Edit Configuration->
  2. Ensure ethernet0.pciSlotNumber is set at 192 on the master target (or at matching values between master and subsequent targets)

Default configuration of VMware VMs usually has the ethernet0.pciSlotNumber at 192, but different hardware configurations can adjust the value.

Problem Cause

PVS targets require a consistent network hardware configuration on virtual or physical machines, between the source of the vdisk and subsequent targets which will boot the vdisk. If network hardware configuration is not consistent, the PVS targets will fail to boot.
