Description
When using BDM to boot the Master Target Device to capture a new vDisk it fails to boot. With verbose mode enabled in the bootstrap you will see the Target download the bootstrap and then login to a PVS Server at which point it will sit at a black screen indefinitely.
Resolution
1. The Master Target Device has multiple drives attached other than just the OS volume. Dis-associate any other drive(s) configured with the VM through their respective hypervisor console and try again.
Alternative:
Leave the Master Target Device drive configuration as is but rather than boot from BDM ISO, use the PXE service or DHCP with options 66 & 67 to boot the Target Device.
Problem Cause
Prior to the second half of the imaging process the Target Device is booting from its local disk. In order to start the imaging process the Target Device must first PXE boot to initialize the vDisk being imaged. PXE will pass control back to the local disk once it has initialized the vDisk in question, this is where the presence of multiple drives causes this process to fail. This is a limitation of the BDM bootstrap but not a problem using the PXE Service or DHCP w/ options 66 & 67.
