Overview

The removal of NPAPI support by Firefox will affect user experience for users who access Citrix Receiver for Web using the Firefox browser on Linux. The impact to the users are as follows:
  • Users will be prompted to install Citrix Receiver every time they access the Receiver for web site.
  • An ICA file will be saved when users try to launch an application or desktop. They will have to click the ICA file at the bottom of the browser to activate the launch.

Note: This article is also applicable for Google Chrome browser users.

Background

Firefox announced that NPAPI plugin support, a capability we have depended on for years, will be disabled beginning from Firefox 52+. NPAPI is a plugin that enables Receiver for Web to detect whether Citrix Workspace app for Linux or Citrix Receiver for Linux is installed. It also allows users to launch applications by simply clicking them once.

Resolution

If there is a mixed environment of Linux endpoints connecting to a particular store, i.e some endpoints have Citrix Workspace App installed and some do not have Citrix Workspace app installed then please refer to the following steps:

This will allow the users launching their desktop/app either using Receiver for HTML5 or Workspace app/Receiver for Linux.

Note: Step a) Administrator Configuration, is required only for storefront version lower than 1906.

a) Administrator configuration

  1. In DDC, launch Citrix Studio > Click Stores under Citrix StoreFront in the left pane > Manage Receiver for WebSites (in Right panel) > configure > Deploy Citrix Receiver - give the deployment option as “Use Receiver for HTML5 if local receiver is unavailable

  3. If the user has selected “Already Installed”: Follow “Always open ICA files” as mentioned above. From now on whenever we click on a desktop/app enumeration, it launches automatically with wfica, thus enabling a smooth seamless user-experience with launch of virtual applications and desktops.
