Description

This article explains the relationship between Networks and VLANs as it pertains to XenDesktop Hosting Units and PVS.
The article also explains a workaround to be able to distribute Target Devices across desired VLANs

The concept of VLAN IDs on the Hypervisor side is unknown to the XenDesktop Hosting Units.
When creating Hosting Units in XenDesktop you can select which Networks are permitted in the Hosting Units.
These Networks might have one or more VLAN IDs tagged in the traffic and configured on the Hypervisor, but this configuration is not known to the XenDesktop Hosting Unit.

Instructions

To isolate PVS Target Devices to a specific VLAN using the XenDesktop Setup Wizard:
  1. First create one or more Network objects on the Hypervisor side that contain only the desired VLANs.
You can create multiple Networks to distribute the Targets across multiple VLANs
Details on how to assign a VLAN ID to a Network vary depending on the Hypervisor used. Please refer to the Hypervisor documentation for details.
  2. Create a Hosting Unit on XenDesktop and select all the Networks that are configured for the desired VLANs
  3. Launch the XenDesktop Setup Wizard from the PVS Console
  4. In the XenDesktop Setup Wizard select the Hosting Unit configured in step #2
  5. The XenDesktop Setup Wizard will then prompt you to select which specific Network will be used for the Targets
  6. Select the Network that contains the desired VLAN and proceed to finish the Wizard
For each set of Targets that will use a different VLAN, follow steps 3 to 6 above making sure you select the desired Network (that contains the desired VLAN) on step #5.

To isolate PVS Target Devices to a specific VLAN using the Streamed VM Setup Wizard:
  1. First create one or more Network objects on the Hypervisor side configured with the desired VLANs.
Each Network Object must be isolated to one specific VLAN.
Details on how to assign a VLAN ID to a Network vary depending on the Hypervisor used. Please refer to the Hypervisor documentation for details.
  2. Clone the Master Template that will be used to create the Targets. Create one clone of the Master Template for each VLAN.
  3. Edit the Settings of each clone of the Master Template to select the Network with the desired VLAN for that Template
  4. Launch the Streamed VM Setup Wizard from the PVS Console
  5. On the "Virtual Machine Template" selection step of the Wizard, select the Template configured for the desired VLAN and proceed to finish the Wizard
For each set of Targets that will use a different VLAN, follow steps 4 and 5 above making sure you select the desired Template (that contains the desired VLAN) on step #5.
