Description

The following procedure describes the configuration changes you must make when you move your existing Unidesk system to a different VMware vCenter infrastructure.

Step 1: Migrate all virtual machines to a different vCenter infrastructure

The easiest method to use for migration is to dedicate a single ESX host as a migration location and migrate the Unidesk virtual appliances to that host.

  1. Use the VMware vSphere migrate command to migrate all of the Unidesk virtual machines to the migration ESX host.
  2. Remove the migration host from the existing vCenter infrastructure and add it to the new vCenter infrastructure.
After adding the migration ESX host to the new vCenter infrastructure, you can migrate the Unidesk virtual machines to other hosts, if desired. If you do so and no longer need the migration host, you can remove it from the inventory and read it to the original vCenter infrastructure.

Alternatively, you can export the Unidesk virtual machines as OVF templates and import them into the new vCenter infrastructure. If you use this method, use the Synchronize Infrastructure action in the Unidesk Management Console to recreate the desktops instead of exporting these virtual machines and importing them again (see Step 3, #7 for additional information).

Step 2: If necessary, change Unidesk virtual appliance IP addresses

If you expect the Unidesk virtual appliances to continue to use their existing IP addresses, go to Step 3.

If you expect the Unidesk virtual appliances to use new IP addresses, use the following procedure:

  1. Follow the instructions in this KB article:
Changing IP addresses for Unidesk virtual appliances
  2. If you change the IP address for the Management Appliance, force a rebuild of the desktops by editing the desktops and making a small configuration change. For example, you can change the Core Dump Type from Mini to None and back.
The rebuild allows desktops to learn the new IP addresses. If you do not need to change the IP address of the Management Appliance, the desktops can obtain the new IP addresses for their assigned CachePoint Appliances automatically. In this situation, no desktop rebuild is required.

Step 3: Reconfigure the Unidesk infrastructure

  1. Log in to the Unidesk Management Console.
  2. Select System and select the Management Appliance (click on the Management Appliance entry in the table).
  3. Select Setup Infrastructure in the Action bar and enter the information for the new vCenter infrastructure.
  4. With the Management Appliance still selected, select Edit Properties.
Unidesk displays an error message at this point. Ignore this message.
  5. Click OK to dismiss the error message.
  6. In the Host and Storage tab, select the new datacenter, the correct hosts, and the correct storage.
  7. For each CachePoint Appliance:
    1. Select the CachePoint Appliance and select Edit Properties in the Action bar.
    2. In the Host and Storage tab, select the correct hosts and storage.
  8. Select Synchronize Infrastructure in the Action bar.
This step allows Unidesk to recognize the new vCenter IDs. If you need to recreate any of the desktops, this wizard allows you to do so.
  9. Select Remove Gold Image in the Action bar and remove all of the original gold images.
After the migration, the information stored in the Unidesk configuration database about the gold images is no longer valid.  However, any existing OS Layers and Application Layers that you built based on the gold image remain operational.
You can reregister any existing gold images in the new infrastructure with the Management Appliance (see https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX232295) or create a new one.
  10. Verify that the correct CachePoint template is specified in the CachePoint Settings:
    1. Select System > Settings and Configuration.
    2. Navigate to CachePoint Settings and check the selection for the CachePoint template.
You might need to import a new template or use VMware vSphere to convert the current CachePoint Appliance to a template, depending on whether the original template was stored on the host that you migrated to the new vCenter infrastructure.
  11. Modify any of the original connection broker or backup settings that you configured in the original vCenter infrastructure.

Step 4: Reconfigure desktops

  1. In the Desktops module, select all of your desktops and select Edit Desktops.
  2. In the Desktop Details tab, change the network selection to the correct network switch.
  3. Power on the desktops after all configuration tasks are complete.
