Licensing Considerations

The following information should be discussed with your IBM licensing contacts:

  • Concurrent user (network) licensing for IBM SPSS packages. Usage of SPSS in a virtualized environment requires a licensing “addendum” and further cost.
  • A physical server (with current Java version present) on which to install the license management software- IBM says that they eventually will but do not currently support running the license management software on a virtual server. If you try installing the license manager on a virtual server and run into trouble, IBM will not be able to help.
  • Obtain Concurrent user authorization codes for the SPSS products and versions being deployed. Log on to the IBM SPSS License Key Center to generate a code for the appropriate number of concurrent users. The codes are very specific to the SPSS version and type of install (network vs. standalone) so be sure you get the right codes.

Layering Naming and Versioning

It is recommended to include the OS Type and OS bit level in the name if you have multiple version of an OS, for Example SPSS21 Win7x32. In 2.0 the bit level is not critical because we will not allow assignment to the wrong OS layer but it still provides important information.
For versions remember that when choosing a layer you can see the layer name and version name but not the version description. Use naming that will allow you to differentiate versions appropriately.
For example while still in development/testing “1.0 12-12-14-2012 QA ONLY”, but when ready for production “1.0 12-12- 2012”.

Installation Steps

Prerequisites
  • Downloads of the software installers for the licensing server and the actual SPSS products (and fix patches) that will be deployed on Unidesk managed machines.
    • Logon is required to access IBM’s support documentation, and then a secondary logon is needed to access the software downloads area. The website is difficult to navigate. Your target is the “Software download & media access” section, where you’ll need to carefully search for your version of the software. There is an “admin” package download with a very similar name, but which only contains command line tools and won’t work for this process. The correct download for this example was just under 100 M in size.
Procedure
In this example a Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64bit server was used for the licensing server.
License Management Server (make note of the server’s IP address)
  1. Confirm that a current Java package (e.g. Java 7.0.170) exists on target server.
  2. Install the IBM SPSS Concurrent Licensing Tools 9.5 - License Manager Microsoft Windows English (part number CI8Z7EN).
  3. As the installation completes, a license authorization wizard appears. Enter your concurrent user authorization code. Sentinel RMS Server Administration is the application that displays license servers and connected users.
  4. The server is now ready to authenticate users. You can point any client network install of your SPSS version to this server.
Create IBM SPSS Application Layer
  1. In the Unidesk Management console, create a new layer.
  2. Install IBM SPSS package. Choose the Network install option, entering the IP address of the licensing server.
  3. Apply any available Fix Packs to application layer.
  4. You may need to clean up extraneous Start Menu shortcuts.
  5. Confirm function of SPSS and agree to the Java security dialog(s) that appear on opening. Reboot the install stub twice.
  6. Finalize the layer.
  7. Apply the layer to desired managed machines and test.
Considerations for Non-Persistent Desktop
None the concurrent license should work fine in a NP desktop without modification
