Description

Write cache drive is filling up quickly after installing Microsoft Updates (Wanna Cry).

Resolution

Complete the following steps:

  1. Revert the image back to the version prior to Microsoft Updates Wanna Cry was installed.
  2. Merge versions to base image with all prior versions.
  3. Run Windows Updates again.
  4. Reboot a couple of times to ensure patches were fully applied.
  5. Disable Windows Update service.
  6. Defragment the vDisk in case it is fragmented which is going to cause Write Cache to fill up quickly as well.
  7. Shutdown and promote vDisk image to Test mode.
  8. Test the new image in Test mode.
  9. Promote image to production.

TO DEFRAGMENT THE VDISK:
  • Create a copy of the .vhd or .vhdx file and mount it to one of the PVS servers using the Disk Management application and make it visible to Windows Explorer.
  • Defragment the partition corresponding to the vDisk mounted using the regular Windows defragmenter tool or any other defragmentation tool.
  • Unmount the vDisk and copy it back to the PVS storage.
  • Import the vDisk into the PVS console with the new name.

Problem Cause

Microsoft Updates were not installed properly before sealing the vDisk and promote it to production.
