Description
Write cache drive is filling up quickly after installing Microsoft Updates (Wanna Cry).
Resolution
Complete the following steps:
- Revert the image back to the version prior to Microsoft Updates Wanna Cry was installed.
- Merge versions to base image with all prior versions.
- Run Windows Updates again.
- Reboot a couple of times to ensure patches were fully applied.
- Disable Windows Update service.
- Defragment the vDisk in case it is fragmented which is going to cause Write Cache to fill up quickly as well.
- Shutdown and promote vDisk image to Test mode.
- Test the new image in Test mode.
- Promote image to production.
TO DEFRAGMENT THE VDISK:
- Create a copy of the .vhd or .vhdx file and mount it to one of the PVS servers using the Disk Management application and make it visible to Windows Explorer.
- Defragment the partition corresponding to the vDisk mounted using the regular Windows defragmenter tool or any other defragmentation tool.
- Unmount the vDisk and copy it back to the PVS storage.
- Import the vDisk into the PVS console with the new name.
Problem Cause
Microsoft Updates were not installed properly before sealing the vDisk and promote it to production.
