Process to update XenServer Tools on PVS image with PVD

Instructions

It is important to perform reverse image while updating XS Tools on PVS image. Also, it is important to have XS Tools installed on the image prior to the install of VDA and target device software.

Follow the  steps below while working with Pvd :

1. Take a Target Device Virtual Machine and make sure that we don’t have any Hard Disk attached to it
2. Make sure that this Target VM is mapped to PVS Console, match the MAC Address
3. To this Target in PVS Console, Assign the vDisk for which you need to perform Reverse Imaging
4. Boot this Target over the Network from the vDisk in Private Mode (We should have the versions merged to do this process, we cannot do Reverse Imaging using an AVHD File)
5. Once we confirm that the Target Device booted up fine with vDisk in Private Mode (vDisk Active), attach an external HDD to this Target
6. The Size of the HDD attached should be more than the size of the vDisk (Confirm the size of vDisk in PVS Store)
7. On the Target, go to Disk Management and Initialize the disk that we attached, Format it, Make a New Partition, say D Drive and Mark the partition as Active
8. So now for this Target, we have one C Drive that is your vDisk and one D Drive (Can be different) that is the Blank HDD
9. We need to copy the C Drive(OS of the vDisk) to the D Drive and for that we use BNImage.exe located at \Program Files\Citrix\Provisioning Services\BNImage.exe
10. Run this exe and select C as the Source Drive and D as the destination Drive
11. Once the process completes, the D Drive will be a replica of the C Drive (vDisk)
12. Change the Boot Order to boot the Target from Local HDD and Boot it
13. Now, uninstall Target device software
14. Uninstall VDA and then XenServer tools
15. Install XenServer Tools 16. Install Target device software
17. Image the Hard Disk into a new vDisk
18. After this, create a new maintenance version of the vDisk and boot a target device to it. **Make sure that this target device does not have a personal vDisk attached to it**
19. Install VDA . The install should ask for reboot once or twice. Make sure you cancel the Personal vDisk update inventory prompt, if it appears before a reboot.
20. After the VDA is installed, run inventory update and shut down the machine.
21. Promote the vDisk to test
