Resolution

The AppData folder where shortcut icons are located is redirected to a network(UNC) path. In windows 8 use of remote paths for shortcuts is disabled by default. Set the following registry key / group policy to enable this feature:

Group Policy

Import WindowsExplorer.admx (windows 8)

Enable the policy 'Windows Components\File Explorer\Allow the use of remote paths in file shortcut icons'

Registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Set 'EnableShellShortcutIconRemotePath' to '1' (reg_dword)

Problem Cause

Since windows 8 use of remote paths for shortcuts is now disabled by default. Since Receiver 4.3.100 shortcut paths for applications are now stored in the registry instead of stub files. A combination of both these factors result in the behavior observed.
