Description

When implementing XenMobile deployment with NetScaler Gateway, Universal (CCU) license count is more than expected.

NetScaler Gateway Use Cases

  • ShareFile
  • XenMobile (Secure Mail, Secure Web, and so on) - Currently, license count is PER DEVICE
  • Receiver for Mobile Devices
  • Receiver for Web (Browser)
  • SSL VPN

Receiver for Windows - will use the same license as SSL VPN Each color represents an increment in CCU license with the same user logging in through NetScaler Gateway. There is a possibility of three license count for all use cases, or even more if the user has multiple mobile devices using XenMobile.

Example

Tom is the user here to demonstrate the example.

  • Tom logs in to iPad for Secure Mail  +1
  • Tom logs in to iPhone for Secure Mail  +1
  • Tom logs in to Android Device for Secure Mail  +1
  • Tom logs in to Receiver for Web on his laptop (Web Browser)  +1
  • Tom logs in to SSL VPN on his PC  +1
  • Tom logs in to Sharefile on iPad or iPhone (uses the existing microVPN)  +0
  • Tom logs in to Receiver for Windows (consumes same license as SSL VPN ) +0
  • Tom logs in to Receiver for mobile devices (only 1 license consumed when Secure Hub hosts all published apps and XenMobile apps) +0

In this scenario Tom is using a total of 5 licenses.

Reasons for More than Expected License Usage

  • Devices with an active session through Secure Hub will consume 1 license, then if Secure Hub is updated an additional license may be consumed. The duration of the extra consumption will last until the original session’s timeout occurs.
    • This is expected behaviour when upgrading to Secure Hub 10.3. If customers require additional temporary universal licenses for the duration of the Secure Hub upgrades, please open a case with Citrix Technical Support
  • In XenMobile the license usage is per device and not per user.
    • Same user logs in on two different mobile devices = 2 license count.
  • Same user logs in for multiple NetScaler Gateway Use Cases: XenMobile, Receiver for Web, SSL VPN, and so on.
  • Session Timeout is set to 7+ days and it is set GLOBALLY and not just in the XenMobile Session Profile.
    • If set globally, the Receiver for Web users can create stale connections when they exit the browser and do not log off correctly from NetScaler Gateway.
  • Android devices create stale connections when the devices are rebooted and Secure Web is reopened. The following example illustrates this behaviour:

You log off from Secure Hub on both devices and clear all session on NetScaler Gateway.

Android License Count starts at: 33

Launch Secure Hub = +1 license34
Launch Secure Mail34
Launch Secure Web34
REBOOT DEVICE34
Launch Secure Mail34
Launch Secure Web = +1 license35

It was notice that after the Android device reboots, you have to re-authenticate when launching Secure Web again. This uses another license count. This is currently being investigated by Citrix Engineers, as a possible issue in the code.
Note: License is NOT per XenMobile application.

Recommendations

  • If you are looking for more of an end-user experience (not having to authenticate every day), then Citrix does not recommend setting the session timeout and XenMobile reauthentication timeout for more than 10080 minutes or seven days.
    • If you are using a timeout value greater than 10080 minutes or seven days then make sure the session timeout is set ONLY for the XenMobile session profile.
    • NetScaler Gateway/XenMobile is currently a per device license structure and not per user, but this will be changed from XenMobile 9.0.
  • If you want to utilize your ICA license for ICA only sessions, then you need to create a separate VIP for CCU Use Cases versus ICA Only.
