Description
When you open a Secure Shell (SSH) connection or a serial console connection to the Service Virtual Machine (SVM) with a non-nsroot user, which was created in the SVM GUI, the following error message appears:
“pam_unix: pam_sm_authenticate: UNIX authentication refused”

Resolution
This is an expected behavior. Currently, only root/nsroot are the shell users on SVM. This limitation is by design.
Problem Cause
This issue occurs because these users are created only for GUI access.

As shown in the following screen shot, the same non-nsroot user test is able to log on to SVM GUI:
