Resolution

SOLUTION 1:
Complete the following steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Validate if target device is configured correctly with its Media Access Control (MAC) address in the PVS console.

  2. Launch the PVS Console on the active PVS Server and connect to the farm experiencing the issue.

  3. Expand the Site node and navigate to Servers.

  4. Right-click each server, select Configure Bootstrap.

  5. On the General tab, remove the IP address of the inactive server.

       6. Click OK and restart the target device.

SOLUTION 2: (specific to Imaging wizard booting via PXE over VMXNet3 Adapter )
Change the Virtual Device Node for the CD/DVD Media from SATA to IDE and remove the SATA controller.

Complete the following steps prior to installing the operating system.
While creating a New Virtual Machine from vSphere Web Client, under Edit Settings -> Customize hardware -> Virtual Hardware, change the Virtual Device Node from SATA to IDE for CD/DVD Media. After selecting the corresponding IDE radio Button, the Remove option for New SATA Controller becomes active. Remove it by clicking the "X".

SOLUTION 3:
1 - Add Target Device to the Collection using PVS Console.
2 - Change the MAC Address on the hypervisor or PVS Console.
3 - Disable PXE service on the Provisioning Service Server.

Problem Cause

CAUSE 1 &3:
Following are the two possible causes for this error message:

  • The target device in the PVS console does not exist or the MAC address is invalid.
  • In a High Availability (HA) environment with Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) service running on both PVS, if one of the PVS Server goes offline and the IP address is still configured in the bootstrap file, any device sending a request for bootstrap to the offline server, generates the error message.

CAUSE 2:
VM imaged with Sata controller during the installation
ESXi VM Hardware version 10 and 11 include a SATA controller for CD/DVD Media by default.
If the SATA and SCSI controller are present on the PVS Target Device, the target will fail to boot.
PVS relies on the SCSI controller, SATA is the only one that can be removed.
The customer in this instance had a SATA CD/ROM on Template and Target Devices.
