This article describes how to configure a XenDesktop 5 site to use an existing SQL database
When configuring a XenDesktop 5 site, you can use the default database (If installed) or an existing database.
During installation of XenDesktop, you receive the option to install SQL Express 2008 R2. If you wish to use an existing standalone SQL server, you can choose to not install SQL express and instead configure your XenDesktop 5 site to use the SQL server.
Launch Desktop Studio.
Select Desktop Deployment.
Enter Site details.
Select Use existing database, type server location, and click Next.
Click Test connection or click Next.
Click OK to allow XenDesktop to automatically create the database.
Note: If the logged on user account does not have permissions to automatically create the SQL database through Desktop Studio, then you can manually create the database by clicking on Generate as highlighted in the preceding screen shot. Clicking this generates a script, which includes instructions on how to manually create the database.
Launch Desktop Studio and select Join existing deployment:
Note: In the preceding screen shot, the Quick deploy option is unavailable because SQL Express (2008 R2) is not installed on the broker (Quick deploy requires all components to be installed on the same server).
Type the host name or IP address of an existing controller in the site you wish to join.
Select Yes when prompted to allow XenDesktop to automatically update the database.
