Description

When running System Application Products Graphical User Interface (SAP GUI) 7.20 on XenApp 5.0, XenApp 6.0 or XenApp 6.5, either on a published desktop or as a seamless application, the following symptoms are experienced:

  • Performance issues, such as SAP GUI not responding or delayed display of changes.

  • Issues refreshing screen when moving the SAP GUI or creating new instances.

Resolution

Workaround

Complete the following steps as a workaround to resolve this issue:

  1. Disable Show shadow border and Activate animated focus when using the SAP Signature Theme.
Note: The SAP GUI uses lesser GDI resources when disabling these features. This might improve responsiveness of the GUI and might resolve display issues.

As an alternate method, define the following registry keys (REG_DWORD) and enter the value “0”:

  • On 32-bit operating system:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\SAP\General\Appearance\ShowShadowBorder

  • On 64-bit operating system:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\SAP\General\Appearance\ShowShadowBorder

  1. The SAP GUI 7.20 can be configured to use different themes, such as the Enjoy Theme or the Classic Theme. These themes use less system resources. Administrators must test the most appropriate theme for their environment based on user preferences and resource allocation.

Note:

  • SAP GUI 7.20 is supported on XenApp 5.0 on Windows Server 2003 and 2008.

  • SAP GUI 7.20 Patch level 5 and later is supported on XenApp 6.0 and XenApp 6.5

Customers still facing performance issues with the SAP GUI 7.20 in a XenApp environment must open a support case with SAP for further troubleshooting.

Problem Cause

If the default settings used by the SAP GUI for the look and feel are changed:

  • SAP GUI 7.20 now uses the new SAP Signature Design as the default theme.

  • SAP GUI 7.10 uses the Enjoy Theme by default. The signature design is available as well but must be enabled by an administrator.

The Signature design requires more memory, CPU and Graphics Device Interface (GDI) resources while drawing, updating or moving the GUI. This may lead to display and performance issues when the underlying operating system is not able to allocate enough resources. It is not recommended to use the Signature Theme in a XenApp environment.
