This article describes cross language connection support.

Summary of Scope Tested

  • XenApp Hosted Apps and Streaming Apps connections on XenApp 5.0 Feature Pack 2 and Hosted/Streaming Plug-in 11.2.

  • All languages in the followings server and client combinations:
    English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Russian.

Prerequisites for Cross Language Connection Support

  • For XenApp 6.0 or earlier, appropriate language files like fonts and Input Method Editors (IMEs) must be installed on both client and server operating systems so that they can correctly display and handle language characters which are exchanged in client/server communications.

  • Hotfix Rollup Pack 1(HRP01) or later is required for XenApp 5.0 for Windows Server 2008 x86 and x64.

Major Software Limitations Under Cross Language Connection Environments

  • Only ASCII characters can be used for folder and file names in Mapped Client Drives.

    • Folder and file names for Content Redirection (Client to Server) must be in ASCII characters for cross language connection environments because this feature needs to access the files in mapped client drives.
    • User Names to log on client PCs should be in ASCII characters. Because there are some folders which have user names in the client PC, Hosted Plug-in cannot access such folders in ICA sessions and they cause problems.
      Note: This limitation is for XenApp 6.0 or earlier.
  • Client Printers must be named in ASCII characters to use them as client printers in ICA sessions.

    • Client Printers named in non-ASCII characters does not work in ICA sessions.

Issues and Workarounds

Issue 1

The Language bar is not shown in seamless sessions connecting to English XenApp Servers.

Workaround 1

When connecting to English XenApp Servers from the other language clients, the Language bar (IME tool bar) is sometimes not shown in seamless ICA sessions. In this case, the language bar can be shown using the following steps:

Caution! Refer to the Disclaimer at the end of this article before using Registry Editor.

  1. Start a desktop session, click Start > Run, type regedit.exe and click OK.

  2. In the Registry Editor add the following String Value and save it:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "ctfmon.exe"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\ctfmon.exe"

  3. Log off from the desktop.

In the Chinese client, if the client default input language is set to Chinese local IME (Microsoft PinYin Input Method for Simplified Chinese), you do not have to do anything and the language bar appears automatically after starting the session, but if the client default input language is set to English (English (United States) - US or Chinese (Simplified) - US keyboard for Simplified Chinese), complete the following procedure to activate the language bar:

  1. Connect to notepad session, confirm no language bar is displayed.

  2. Log off from the notepad.

  3. Start a desktop session, and navigate to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Languages tab. Click Details, click Add to add Chinese local IME, click OK, then OK to apply.

  4. Click Start > Run, type regedit.exe and click OK. In the Registry Editor, check if the following registry exists:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "ctfmon.exe"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\ctfmon.exe"

  5. Log off from the desktop.

  6. Start the notepad session again, the language bar must appear.

Issue 2

Chinese Client (Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese) connection does not allow Chinese character entry.

Workaround 2

In ICA session from Chinese clients, you need to manually add Chinese IME to input Chinese characters if the client default input language is not set to Chinese IME. Complete the following procedure to add Chinese IME in the ICA sessions:

  1. Start an ICA session.

  2. Click Settings of the language bar in the session.

  3. In the Settings tab, click Add to add Chinese IME and click OK.

Chinese IME is now added and users can input Chinese characters in the sessions.

For XenApp 6.0 or earlier, Non-ASCII user names cannot be used. There are some folders which have user names in client PC, ICA client cannot access such folders in ICA sessions and they might cause problems.

For Path-through authentication feature, ASCII user name cannot be used even in XenApp 6.5 or later.

Client Printer names

For XenApp 6.0 or earlier, non-ASCII characters cannot be used for auto created printer name. Client printers named in non-ASCII characters are not detected in ICA sessions correctly. Therefore, client printers must be named in ASCII characters in cross language connection environments.

Even in XenApp 6.5 or later, unicode special characters like surrogate paired characters are not supported

Surrogate paired characters which were introduced in JIS2004 character set entered by client local IME cannot be sent to server.

Client Drive mapping

For XenApp 6.0 or earlier, non-ASCII characters cannot be used for folder and file names in mapped client drives. Non-ASCII characters in mapped client drives displays an error message when they are accessed.

For XenApp 6.5 or later, unicode special characters like surrogate paired characters are supported for Client Drive Mapping.

Content Redirection
(File Type Association)

For XenApp 6.0 or earlier, non-ASCII characters cannot be used for folder and file names on Content Redirection feature. This feature needs access to files in mapped client drives (See ID16: Client Drive mapping).

Note: These are major server-side limitations, not only for cross language connection environments but common for localized language environments. The following is just for reference:
