Description
After an upgrade of XenServer, Virtual Machines (VMs) will not start with the following error:
Error: Starting VM 'Name-of-VM - This operation cannot be performed because the specified VDI could not be found on the storage substrate
Resolution
To resolve this issue, complete the following procedure:
- Set all DVD drives on the virtual machines to “<empty>”.\
- On XenCenter console, click the virtual machine and select the Storage tab.
- From the drop-down list, select <empty> as the CD/DVD.
Problem Cause
VM has association with a VDI that is no longer available. Often, this is due to DVD associated with an ISO that is no longer available.
Issue/Introduction
After an upgrade of XenServer, Virtual Machines (VMs) will not start with the following error:
Error: Starting VM 'Name-of-VM - This operation cannot be performed because the specified VDI could not be found on the storage substrate
Additional Information
Often, the issue occurs because of DVD not set to empty before upgrade of XenServer from one version to the next. Other times, the CIFS or NFS ISO library is no longer available, or possible VM was using the physical DVD drive, which is now empty. It is best practice to set DVD drive to empty when VM no longer requires access to ISO or physical DVD drive.
