Issue(s) Resolved in this Hotfix

This hotfix addresses the following issue reported against Provisioning Services 5.1, 5.1 Service Pack 1, 5.1 Service Pack 2, 5.6 and 5.6 Service Pack 1 releases:

BG-18969: ESX 4.0 and above versions using VMXNet3 driver crashes on all other VMs besides Master target device.

Installing and Uninstalling this Hotfix

    • The user must have administrative rights to the Provisioning Services target device.

    • The hotfix applies to target devices with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 installation.

    • The hotfix must be installed on a master target device before the PVS target device software is installed.

    • The installers will check for supported OS (Vista and later) and for the presence of the vmxnet3 NIC (by looking for the driver vmxnet3n61x86 or vmxnet3n61x64 in \system32\drivers). It cannot check for the VMXNET3 as the boot NIC since there are no known ways to tell this in Windows and it won’t check for PCI ID.

To install this hotfix:

    1. Download the hotfix package from the Hotfixes and Service Packs page of the Citrix Web site at

2. Copy the hotfix package to an empty folder on the hard drive of the target device you want to update and unzip the file.

Steps to install the hotfix:

In the hotfix folder, you will find two installation packages, a 32 and 64 bit installation executable.

Steps to install the hotfix on the Provisioning Services master target device:

1. Boot the master target device from the local hard disk.

2. Log into the master target device and make sure the VMware Tools is installed.

3. Execute the appropriate version of the installation executable; you must have local administrator privileges to install the hotfix:

a. if you are running a 32 bit system execute "Device Identity Manager.exe"

b. if you are running a 64 bit system execute "Device Identity Manager x64.exe"

After installing, two instances of installation (Device Identity Manager and Windows Driver Package), will appear in control panel.

4. Reboot the master target device.

5. Install the Citrix Provisioning Services target device software on the master target device.

6. Create the vDisk image from the master target device.

To uninstall this Hotfix:

When uninstalling, users have a choice of uninstalling the ‘Windows Driver Package’ then the ‘Device Identity Manager’ or they can just uninstall ‘Device Identity Manager.’ This will automatically uninstall the Window Driver Package automatically.

Known issue: cdimgr.sys is not being removed from \System32\drivers during uninstall, but if user installs another version of Device Identity Manager with a newer cdimgr.sys, the installer will overwrite the older version.
