Archive: How to Troubleshoot when a Web Interface Site Displays an Internal Error on User Access

Users connecting to Web Interface 5.3 receive the following error message.

"Internal Error
The Web site is experiencing technical difficulties. We apologize for any inconvenience.
The internal error may only be temporary. Try reconnecting and, if the problem persists, contact your system administrator."

This article describes how to determine the cause of the issue and get a more detailed picture of the problem.


  1. On the Web Interface server, browse to C:\inetpub\wwwroot\citrix\xenapp and open the web.config file. Locate the following line.
    <Compilation debug=”false” batch=”true” defaultlanguage=”C#”>
  2. Change the debug value to True.
  3. Locate the following line and change the value to Off.
    <CustomErrors mode=”On” defaultRedirect=”~/html/server.html”>
  4. Perform an IISRESET
  5. Reconnect to the Web Interface site and you receive a much more detailed error message that can assist in troubleshooting the root cause.
