Summary
This article describes current known issues about garbled characters printing with the Enhanced Metafile (EMF)-based Citrix Universal Printer.
Resolutions
1. If a public application is a non-Unicode program, the following fix may resolve the problem.
Non-Unicode characters might not print properly when using the Universal Print Driver. [#165026]
This fix is included in the following Hotfix Rollup Packs.
Hotfix Rollup Pack PSE400W2KR04 - For Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 for Windows 2000 Server
2. If Japanese characters are garbled as boxes, it may be related to the issue discussed in the following Microsoft Article.
Japanese characters appear as boxes when you use a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based printer server to print the characters
3. If Japanese characters are garbled as symbols, check whether character codes are same on both the Windows XP client and the Windows Server 2003. If KB927489 (JIS2004 fonts) is installed on only one side, garbled printing may occur with the Universal Print Driver.

Additional Information
The default Universal printer driver (UPD) of Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 or Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 leverages Enhanced Metafile (EMF) technology. Basically, UPD captures the EMF spool file, which is created by the Windows operating system, and sends over to the client, where it is rendered. If the garbled printing is related to EMF, fonts, or printers, the same issue may occur with following steps by using network printers or RDP without Citrix Presentation Server.
Note: Make sure that the following two options on the advanced tab of a printer are selected to enable EMF spooling:
Spool print documents so that a program finishes printing faster and select Enable Advanced Printing Features.
Network Printer
1. Share the printer on client PC.
2. Connect the shared printer from Windows Server 2003.
3. Print the documents from the server with the shared printer.
RDP
1. Check Printers on Local Resources tab.
2. Connect to the server desktop.
3. Print the documents with the redirected printer.
