Print Detective v1.2.1.5
Created Date: 5/21/2008
Updated Date: 6/2/2011
Description
Print Detective is an information gathering utility that can be used for troubleshooting problems related to print drivers. It enumerates all printer drivers from the specified Windows machine, including driver specific information. It can also be used to delete specified print drivers. It allows for log file capabilities and provides a command-line interface as well.
Prerequisites
Minimum supported operating systems:
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2008
Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows XP
Windows 7
Windows 8
Installing Print Detective
To install Print Detective, copy the PrintDetective.exe executable file to the desired location, for the appropriate platform.
For example, on a 32-bit system, use the PrintDetective.exe from the x86 directory, and on a 64-bit system use the one from the x64 directory. There is no installer required as the application is contained in a standalone executable file.
The Print Detective package includes the PrintDetective.exe file for the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows (located in the x86 and x64 folders respectively), and the PrintDetective.chm user guide.
New in this version:
The criteria used to determine non-native and non-Citrix print drivers has been updated and now works properly on all operating systems without crashing.
The list of print drivers is shown by the print driver name ascending and shows the full column width.
How to Use Print Detective
See the user guide included with the package for full usage instructions.
Security Permissions Required by Print Detective
Administrative permissions are required to delete print drivers.
Data Modified by Print Detective
For the driver deletion feature, Print Detective attempts to delete drivers programmatically, through the use of the Microsoft printing Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). These APIs, in turn, modify/affect the specified driver’s registry values and files.
How to Undo the Changes Made by Print Detective
Note: If you choose to use Print Detective to delete any printers and/or drivers, it is recommended that you ensure that backup drivers are available prior to deletion, in case they are needed. Print Detective will not be able to restore any drivers and/or driver settings once deleted. This is similar to using the Printers and Faxes Control Panel applet to delete print drivers.
Uninstalling Print Detective
Delete the files included with this package (they are outlined in the included user guide).
