Severity: Low

Description of Problem

Under specific circumstances, the installation process for Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 and Citrix Desktop Server 1.0 could result in database credentials being written to an MSI logfile.

This weakness affects the following products:

    • Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 (all versions)

    • Citrix Desktop Server 1.0

Mitigating Factors

If MSI logging was not enabled when the product was installed, the credentials will not be logged.

By default, MSI logging is not enabled. In order for this problem to occur, MSI logging would need to be enabled at the time the affected product is installed. MSI logging can be enabled by either a command-line option specified at install time, a registry setting, or a group policy setting.

It is general good practice to ensure that access to logfiles is restricted to appropriate users. When access to the logfiles is suitably restricted, there is a much reduced risk of the credentials being disclosed.

What Customers Should Do

Customers that have installed an affected product should ensure that any generated logfiles are suitably locked down or deleted.

Customers that are planning to install an affected product have a number of options:

    • Ensure MSI logging is disabled

    • Ensure that logfiles are written to a suitably locked down location

    • Apply the supplied MSI transform described below

Citrix has released an MSI transform that, when applied, will prevent a vulnerable installer logging the database credentials even if MSI logging is enabled. The transform is available at the following location:
