Service Class Policies Explained

Summary

Service classes are user-defined groups of IP addresses and port numbers that allow the WANScaler to accelerate or not accelerate a particular group of connections or a single connection.

Once a service class is created, acceleration (also known as flow control) and compression can be enabled or disabled for that particular service class.

Background

Service classes are evaluated on both partner WANScalers; only features common on both sets of rules are enabled.

When a connection is opened, the first policy in the list that matches its IP/port numbers is used. Both service classes and their rules are tested against the connection in order (top to bottom), and the first matching rule is applied. Later rules that also match are not applied; only the first match is applied. The default rule should always be moved down to the bottom of the list.

How to Create a New Service Class

    1. Navigate to the Service Class page

    2. Click New Service Class

    3. Enter the name of your new service class (for example, **TestServiceClass**) and click Create.



    4. Select your new service class, **TestServiceClass**, from the Service Name column.



    5. Click New Rule and set your IP connection to control, as well as the port usage. To specify a subnet value, use the standard /xx suffix. Several rules can be created for one service class.



    6. Navigate to the Service Class Policy page.

    7. Find your newly created service class in the table, select your service class, and move it up the list to give it priority over the others. While **TestServiceClass** is highlighted, click the Move Up button until **TestServiceClass** sits at the top of the list. Click Apply.

How To Enable Acceleration and Compression

After a service class policy is created and prioritized, select the flow control check box to enable acceleration.

To enable compression, select Disk or Memory from the drop-down menu (flow control must be enabled) and click Apply.

How to Disable Acceleration

After a Service Class Policy is created and prioritized, to disable acceleration for that service class disable flow control by un-checking the marker, then click Apply.

Compression defaults to none once no flow control is applied.

Note: This policy must be placed high up in the list.

How to Delete a Service Class

1. Click the Action button for the service class policy.

2. Click the Delete button.
