Summary
Quality of Service (QoS) and fair queuing apply only to WANScaler accelerated traffic. This article discusses how to prioritize or otherwise deal with non-accelerated traffic.
Background
Example:
An environment uses a site-to-site Virtual Private Network (VPN) where 90 percent of available bandwidth is consumed by local internet traffic. What options are available to assign the lowest service class to this non-accelerated traffic?
Because the WANScaler leaves non-accelerated traffic alone, there are two basic approaches to this:
1. Use hardboost on the accelerated links.
2. Use softboost, but enable the router’s QoS features to favor the VPN traffic over the Internet traffic. The router approach has the advantage that the router can be configured to prioritize different kinds of non-accelerated traffic (giving Voice over IP (VoIP) high precedence and Internet traffic low precedence, for example). To the WANScaler, all non-accelerated traffic is the same.

WANScaler QoS operates only on accelerated traffic, because it is an extension of WANScaler’s fair queuing. Inline installations can also use the “Partial Bandwidth” feature to protect VoIP and other latency-sensitive non-accelerated traffic.
