Case Study: Configuring Permanent Client Printers

Document ID: CTX114082   /   Created On: Aug 2, 2007   /   Updated On: Nov 8, 2007
Average Rating: not yet rated

Problem Definition

The customer was using a legacy telnet application that required a permanent client printer to already be in place before launching the application.

Environment

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Citrix Presentation Server 4.0
  • Hotfix Rollup Pack 3 (PSE400W2K3R03)

Background

The customer autocreated a printer, deleted the content within the comment field, and had an administrator take ownership of the printer.

When the client would reconnect, the printer would reappear as an available static printer and the print share would need to be re-created.

The customer was using this functionality in MetaFrame 1.8 and had difficulty configuring this in Presentation Server 4.0.

Resolution

Create a permanent client printer.

A prerequisite to creating a permanent client printer is to configure a policy to utilize the legacy-style naming convention of printers. See the "Permanent Client Printers" section of CTX108170 – Presentation Server 4.0 Printing Enhancements for information on creating a permanent client printer.

Complete the following procedure to create a permanent client printer:

1. Create a new legacy printer policy by choosing the Policy node in the Presentation Server Console.

2. Double-click the policy and go to Printing > Client Printers > Legacy client printers.

3. Select the Enabled radio button and then select the Create old-style client printers radio button. Refer to the following screen shot:

4. Take ownership of the autocreated printer. To do so, right-click the printer and click Properties. Select the Security tab and click the Advanced button. Select the Owner tab, click Other Users or Groups and add the appropriate accounts if needed.

5. Give the appropriate accounts rights to the printer.

6. Use the Add Printer Wizard to connect to a client port.

7. Right-click the autocreated printer, click Properties, and select the Sharing tab. Select the Share this printer radio button and click OK.
