Symptom 1
Upgrading the Citrix License Server for Presentation Server 4.0 (FLEXlm version 9.2) to the Citrix License Server for Presentation Server 4.5 (FLEXlm version 11.3) fails. The Citrix License Management Console service starts, but the Citrix FLEXlm license service starts and stops. The following message is received:
"The CitrixLicensing service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."
Reverting back to the License Server for Presentation Server 4.0 works without issue.
Symptom 2
The same error in Symptom 1 occurs. Event ID 732 appears in the Event Log.
"Description: Flexnet license server system is shutting down"
The following error message appears after issuing the lmstat –a command:
"The lmgrd.exe cannot find the license file"
The following error message appears after issuing the lmpath ADD citrix command:
"Lmgrd is not running cannot connect to license server system(-15,10:10061"winsock:comnnection refused".)"
Removing the license file(s) from the MYFiles directory allows all services to start.
Cause 1
The issue is caused by a third party FLEXlm licensing application installed on the Citrix License Server. The FLEXlm licensing key is shared with an another application.
Citrix License Servers should not to share the FLEXlm licensing key with any another application.
It could be that not all the Macrovison files are updated when the License Server for Presentation Server 4.5 is installed because they are in use by the other FLEXlm licensing application. This causes the upgrade to fail, even if the License Server for Presentation Server 4.0 does not have an issue.
Cause 2
An improper configuration.
Resolution 1
Remove the third party licensing application that uses FLEXlm before upgrading the License Server.
Resolution 2
Verify the startup.lic, citrix.opt, and license files are configured for the correct ports and pointing to the correct directories.
