Summary

Citrix products use the FLEXlm licensing technology for licensing. Some products can communicate with a separately installed license server. Other products have the licensing components integrated into the product itself—these products have an onboard license server and cannot communicate with an external license server.

When requesting a license file, depending on the product, the license file must be requested with the license server’s hostname, Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN), or Media Access Control (MAC) address as the binding identifier.

Refer to the information below to decipher if your product has onboard or external license server support and what binding identifier is needed when requesting license files.

Onboard license server—the license file is uploaded to the device

An onboard license server is installed on some Citrix products. License files must be requested from www.mycitrix.com and uploaded directly to these products. See the individual products' documentation for more information about uploading license files. These products cannot use a standalone license server. The licensing components, such as lmgrd.exe and citrix.exe, are automatically installed on these products.

Below is the list of Citrix products that use an onboard license server:

• NetScaler

• Access Gateway Enterprise Edition

• Access Gateway Standard Edition

• Citrix Access Essentials 1.0 and 2.0

• Application Gateway

• EdgeSight 4.2

External standalone license server—these products can point to an external license server

A standalone license server can be installed on a Windows Server and the products below can point to this license server's location by name or IP address. License files for specific products must be requested from www.mycitrix.com and uploaded to the license server.

The following products can use an external standalone license server.

• Citrix Presentation Server 4.0, 4.5

• MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0

• Presentation Server for Unix 4.0

• Password Manager 4.x

• Access Gateway Advanced Edition

• Desktop Server

• EdgeSight 4.5

Binding identifiers in license files

The binding identifier is the information that must be entered when requesting the license file for a product on www.mycitrix.com . The binding identifier is different depending on which product you are requesting license files for. This information is seen in the license file on the following line:

< Server HOSTNAME=    >

The following lists detail the specific binding identifier required in the license file for specific Citrix products:

Hostname:

• Presentation Server

• Access Essentials

• Access Gateway Advanced Edition

• Password Manager

• Desktop Server

• EdgeSight

• Presentation Server for Unix 4.0

MAC address:

• NetScaler

• Application Gateway

FQDN:

• Access Gateway Standard Edition
