WindowHistory Mobile

Version 2.2

Created Date: 08/02/2006

Updated Date: 01/04/2007

Description

Sometimes there is a need to debug GUI and save information about windows in a Windows Mobile system such as creation/destruction time, screen coordinates, process and thread ID, and so on.

The WindowHistory Mobile utility constantly monitors windows in the system and allows you to save information about windows for further analysis and debugging.

The utility has a simple interface:

You can include all child windows and specify update frequency. After every interval (5 seconds by default) the utility captures information about current windows in the system. Shorter intervals can be specified for a better capture. For example, if users manage to run and quit Word between updates, the information about Word windows is not captured.

The tool can record and save all changes to all windows (using the Record changes check box). The following changes are recorded (including the time when the change happens):

  • Title
  • Position and size
  • Attributes: visible, foreground, hung, minimized
  • Style
  • Extended style
  • ID
  • Class style
  • Owner
  • Z-Order

In addition, WindowHistory Mobile records and displays:

  • Start and end (format) time
  • The screen size of the primary display monitor
  • Whether a window is valid at the formatting time (this helps eliminate destroyed windows)

How to Use WindowHistory Mobile

  1. To start a capture, click the Start button, which then becomes a Stop button. You can work with other programs after that.

  1. Stop the capture at any time using the Stop button and wait until the information is formatted and displayed (the amount of time this step takes depends on your mobile device’s processor speed):

  1. After formatting, you can save the output for later analysis by clicking the Save button.

Installing WindowHistory

There are two folders containing WindowHistoryMobile.exe:

  • Pocket PC 2003 (ARMV4)
  • Windows Mobile 5.0 (ARMV4I)

Download the appropriate executable file to your mobile device and run it.

Uninstalling WindowHistory

To uninstall this utility, delete WindowHistoryMobile.exe.
