Summary

After adding another file type to the documents library, the icon link is broken. How can I change the icon to reflect the new file type icon?

Requirements

• Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server

-or-

• Windows SharePoint Services

Procedure

This issue is not a Web Interface for SharePoint issue, but to correct the issue follow the steps listed below.

To add a document type and type icon, do the following:

Note: The information below is just an example. Change the .gif files to reflect the appropriate image names for the environment.

  1. In the Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\Templates\xml directory, open DOCICON.XML.
  2. In the middle of the file, find the ByExtension section.
  3. For the sake of example, we will add a .wav file type and an icon to represent what kind of file it is. Add a line such as the following:
    <Mapping Key="wav" Value="icwav.gif"/>
  4. In the Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\Templates\Images directory, add an appropriate icon and call it "icwav.gif".
  5. Restart Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).

Note: All sites created from now on will display the .gif image in document libraries for files matching the extension.
