About the Access Client for MetaFrame

Managing Client Software Using the Access Client for MetaFrame

The products in the MetaFrame Access Suite require that various pieces of client software be installed on your users’ devices. If you are using multiple products within the suite, you can use the Access Client for MetaFrame to create a Windows Installer package that contains the client software pieces you need to deploy.

The Access Client for MetaFrame contains a number of the client-side pieces of the MetaFrame Access Suite, allowing you to quickly and easily deploy and maintain the client-side software to your users using one convenient Windows Installer package. Once you have deployed your client software, you can update your installations simply by creating and deploying an updated installation package using the latest version of the Access Client for MetaFrame.

The Access Client for MetaFrame is available in the Download section of the Citrix Web site, www.citrix.com, and contains up to date client software and hotfixes for a number of the client-side pieces of the MetaFrame Access Suite.

Client Software Available for the Access Client for MetaFrame

    • MetaFrame Presentation Server: Program Neighborhood, Program Neighborhood Agent, Web Client

    • MetaFrame Secure Access Manager (Access Gateway Enterprise): Web Site Viewer, Gateway Client, Advanced Gateway Client, Live Edit Client, End-Point Analysis Client

    • MetaFrame Password Manager: MetaFrame Password Manager agent

Creating a Client Distribution Package

Run the Access Client for MetaFrame in administrative mode to select the client-side software pieces you want to package together. Enter the following command at a command line to run in administrative mode:

msiexec.exe /a [path to msi file]

Select your client components, and optionally customize the installation process of each client. Additionally, you can choose to reduce the overall size of the final distribution package by selecting the option to remove unused files. For more information about custom installation options for each client-side component, see the Client for 32-bit Windows Administrator’s Guide, the MetaFrame Password Manager Administrator’s Guide, or the MetaFrame Secure Access Manager Administrator's Guide.

Each client installation that includes a MetaFrame Presentation Server client includes the Program Neighborhood Connection Center, allowing users to see information about their current ICA connections.

Planning Your Client Software Package

The Access Client for MetaFrame installs and upgrades all available clients that you specify when you build your software package. Every item included in your original client software package should be included in any subsequent upgrade packages you create.

For example, if you create a software package that includes Program Neighborhood and the Password Manager agent software, subsequent upgrade packages must included both client software packages. If you create an upgrade package that includes only Program Neighborhood, the Access Client for MetaFrame will uninstall the Password Manager agent software.

Conversely, if you later want to add the Web Site Viewer to your environment, rebuild your package to include Program Neighborhood, the Password Manager agent, and the Web Site Viewer. When this Windows Installer File is run on client devices that have your original package installed, the Web Site Viewer will be installed, while Program Neighborhood and the Password Manager agent software will simply be verified as installed and not changed in any way.

The final software package will install only the software pieces you select; however, the package itself will include information and files for all software pieces available for installation. You can remove the unneeded software pieces by selecting the file size reduction option during the package creation process.

Reducing the Size of your Client Software Package

When you create your client software package, you select which software components to include in the package. One option available, file size reduction, allows you to create a smaller software package. If you select this option during the package creation process, the final Windows Installer file will include only the software components needed for your installation and making the file smaller in size.

If you have created a client software package using the file size reduction option, and find you need to redistribute a new package with additional software components, uninstall your original client software package, then install the new client software package.

Distributing and Installing Your Client Software Package

Once you have created your client software package, you can make it available to your users on a network share point, or distribute it using your Active Directory infrastructure.

Client devices must meet the requirements of each client software component within your package. For example, if you attempt to install a package that includes Program Neighborhood and the Advanced Gateway client on a device that does not meet the requirements for Program Neighborhood, only the Advanced Gateway client is installed.

The software package you create using the Access Client for MetaFrame will upgrade previously installed client software on your client devices. For example, if you create a Windows Installer package that includes the Program Neighborhood Agent, installing that package on a device that has a stand-alone version of the Program Neighborhood Agent will upgrade the Program Neighborhood Agent automatically and treat it as part of the software package. You will not be able to upgrade the Program Neighborhood Agent without creating a new client software package.

To uninstall a client that was installed or upgraded using a Windows Installer package, users must run the Add/Remove Programs utility from the Control Panel, or run the installer package again and select the Remove option.

To install the client software using the Windows Installer package, the Windows Installer Service must be installed on the client device. This service is present by default on Windows 2000 systems.
