OutBufLength Should be Modified for Wireless WAN (wWAN) Connections Only

Summary

To improve ICA protocol performance, the following white papers recommend changes to the values for OutBufLength, OutBufCountClient and OutBufCountHost:

CTX101602 – Optimizing Citrix Technology for Operation over Wireless Wide Area Networks

CTX101879 – Choosing and Configuring Devices for Wireless WAN use in a Citrix Environment

These recommendations are intended for wireless WANs only. Modifying these values for users on wireless LANs or non-wireless WANs will negatively impact ICA performance.

Also, please note that the following parameters are only interpreted when connecting to MetaFrame XP with Feature Release 1 or earlier:

  • OutBufCountClient
  • OutBufCountHost

When connecting to MetaFrame XP with Feature Release 2 or later, the above parameters are ignored. MetaFrame XP with Feature Release 2 connections should use the following parameters instead:

  • OutBufCountClient2
  • OutBufCountHost2

If OutBufLength2 is increased to 512 as the white papers above recommend but OutBufCountClient2 and OutBufCountHost2 are not modified from their default values, users connecting to MetaFrame XP Feature Release 2 or later will experience unnecessary performance degradation.

More information

For users connecting to any version of MetaFrame Presentation Server across a LAN or traditional WAN, Citrix recommends that these parameters not be included in the user’s ICA file or Appsrv.ini file. The default values offer the best performance across non-wireless networks.
