Symptoms

Setting up a policy to allow an administrator to shadow a user without notification works successfully. Setting up a second policy for the Help desk to shadow with notification works successfully. However, when the administrator tries to shadow again, the following error message appears:

“Shadow failed. Error code 5”

Resolution

1. In the Management Console, create a policy named “Admin.” Enable shadowing for this policy, assign the administrators group as authorized to shadow policy users, and assign users to this policy.

2. In Citrix Connection Configuration, set the shadowing settings for ICA to is enabled, input ON, notify OFF.

3. Connect to the server as a user assigned to this policy using an ICA Win32 custom connection.

4. In the Management Console, select the session for that user and select Shadow. The user is shadowed from the console without notification.

5. In the Management Console, create a policy named “HelpDesk.” Enable shadowing for the policy, assign another group (HelpDesk group for example) as authorized to shadow policy users, and assign a different user to this policy.

6. In Citrix Connection Configuration, set the shadowing settings for ICA to is enabled, input ON, notify ON.

7. Log on to the Management Console as a member of the HelpDesk group.

8. Connect to the server as the user created for Step 5 through an ICA Win32 custom connection.

9. In the Management Console, select the session for that user and select Shadow. The user is shadowed from the Management Console with notification.

10. Connect to the server as a third user through an ICA Win32 custom connection.

11. Log on to the Management Console as a member of the Administrators group.

12. In the Management Console, select the session for the third user and select Shadow. The user is shadowed from the Management Console with notification.

More Information

The above steps outline the correct way to resolve the “Shadow failed. Error code 5” message using multiple policies. Step 12 attempts to alter the reader that the difference in functionality from step 4 has now changed because the listener option has been altered in step 6. For all users, Shadow notification can only be configured as on or off.
